Easter Sunday accross the Chaplaincy

Easter Day was celebrated across the whole chaplaincy for the first time, with communion services in Aix en Provence, the Luberon and All Saints Marseille. All were well attended as we celebrated together. Christ is risen!

Easter Sunday

25 years as a priest!

On Sunday 28th April we celebrated a significant anniversary with Rev Sue Goodwin, who was one of the first women to be ordained 25 years ago. She presided at the communion service at All Saints Marseille and afterwards we enjoyed "fizz and cakes". Many congratulations to Sue, a real pioneer of women's ministry in the Anglican church.

Ascension Day Eucharist in Lorgues (Var) - May 14th 2015

The Rev Peter Massey and his wife, Shirley, again welcomed people from the Anglican Chaplaincies of the Riviera (ACR) at their home in Lorgues (Var). Linking the separations created by the 2nd World War and the policy of evacuation that caused family ties to be cut but with hope of being reunited, Peter talked of the bewilderment of the disciples after the Ascension : " Confusion and apprehension mixed with hope and expectation was to be the precursor to reunion. Pentecost, with its promise of spiritual power and its challenge of being Jesus's witnesses. ". The service was followed by a pot-luck lunch in the garden, a very sociable time in bright sunshine.

JournÉes du Patrimoine - SEPT 20th, 21st 2014

We enjoyed a successful portes ouvertes during our first foray into the Journées du patrimoine, opening the church from 12h to 17h on both days of the weekend. We offered historical tours of the church (in English and in French) as well as tea, coffee and cakes, and the very warm welcome offered by our team (Tim, Amanda, Roxana, Helen and Anne) went down exceedingly well. We were able to explain about the Anglican Church: virtually everyone had heard of Henry VIII ("L'Eglise anglicane, c'est à cause d'une femme, n'est-ce pas?"!) but were unclear about our relationship to the Catholics and the Protestants. We were pleased to see a total of 82 people coming through the doors over the two afternoons (44 on Sat, 38 on Sun) and we had many interesting discussions; most were French, but we also had two English, one Scottish and four Romanian visitors, as well as two Muslims who were very perplexed by the font! Several people stayed for 20-30 minutes, including some for whom we clearly provided a welcome listening ear. We also gave details of the church website to several interested potential worshippers, and sold several copies of the new church history All Saints and Sailors...if you haven't bought your copy yet, it's only 5 euros, all of which goes into church funds. All in all, we feel these portes ouvertes was a success and hope to repeat the venture next year.

Ascension Day Picnic - May 29th 2014

The 29th May saw the inauguration of the Annual Ascension Day Picnic when the Anglican churches of the Riviera got together for a communal meal. Organised by Dany Carew (Monaco) and held in the grounds of the church of Lorgues with Fayence (Var) about 70 people enjoyed a service in the garden followed by a pot-luck buffet.
